Hair Colour Correction in Oakville

If your hair colour hasn’t gone as planned — whether from a DIY box dye gone wrong, an uneven salon result, or simply a colour you’ve changed your mind about — Matthew Jonathan Salon is Oakville’s most trusted destination for professional hair colour correction.
We have completed hundreds of colour corrections for clients across the GTA. This is what we’re known for.
What Is Colour Correction?
Colour correction is the process of correcting, adjusting or completely transforming hair that has been coloured and is not where you want it to be. This could include:
- Removing or lightening box dye — box dyes penetrate the hair shaft differently to professional colour and can be unpredictable to remove
- Correcting brassy or orange tones — common after lightening dark hair without proper toning
- Fixing uneven colour — patchiness, banding or inconsistent results
- Colour to colour changes — transitioning from one colour to another (e.g. brunette to blonde)
- Fixing over-processed or damaged hair — restoring hair that has been over-lightened
Colour correction is rarely a single, straightforward service. It often combines multiple techniques — careful lightening, custom toning, deep-conditioning treatments, and sometimes a return visit weeks later — to bring your hair back to where you want it without compromising its health. It’s the difference between a colourist who applies colour and a colourist who understands colour.
Common Reasons Clients Come to Us for Colour Correction
Every week we welcome clients from Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, and beyond who have ended up in colour situations they didn’t expect. Some of the most common reasons include:
- Box dye gone wrong — box dyes are formulated for predictable single-process coverage and can be very difficult to remove or lift evenly. We have a particular specialty in safely correcting box-dyed hair.
- Brassy, orange, or yellow tones — usually the result of lightening dark hair without the right toner, or toner that has faded over time. We use custom-mixed toners to restore the cool, neutral, or warm tone you actually wanted.
- Banded or patchy highlights — when colour has been applied unevenly, leaving visible lines, stripes, or sections lighter or darker than the rest of the hair.
- A botched balayage — balayage is a hand-painted technique that requires significant skill. When it goes wrong, the result is often blocky, brassy, or sits too high on the hair.
- Going from blonde back to brunette (or vice versa) — the most demanding colour-to-colour transitions, requiring careful filling, depositing, or stripping of pigment.
- Over-processed, fragile hair — when previous services have left hair compromised. Here, restoring hair health often comes before any further colour.
- Faded or dull permanent colour — sometimes the goal is simply to refresh and revive a colour that hasn’t held up the way it should.
If your situation isn’t on this list, that doesn’t mean we can’t help — it just means we’d love to discuss it during a consultation.
Why Colour Correction Requires a Specialist
Colour correction is one of the most complex services in the hair industry. Unlike a fresh colour application, correction requires a colourist who understands the science of colour, how different products interact with each other, and how to protect the hair’s integrity throughout the process.
At Matthew Jonathan Salon, our senior colourists have years of experience in complex colour correction. We’ve helped clients who’ve come to us from across the GTA — from Oakville and Burlington to Mississauga, Toronto and beyond — with colour situations that other salons weren’t able to resolve.
There’s also an emotional element to colour correction that we never overlook. Many of our clients arrive feeling frustrated, embarrassed, or genuinely upset about their hair. We’ve seen it all, and we promise: there’s no judgment here. Our job is to listen, plan a realistic path forward, and help you leave feeling like yourself again.
Our Colour Correction Process
Every colour correction at Matthew Jonathan begins with a thorough consultation. Before we touch your hair, we need to understand:
- Your full colour history — every product that has been applied to your hair
- Whether box dyes have ever been used (this is critical)
- Any chemical processes your hair has undergone (perms, relaxers, keratin treatments)
- The current condition and strength of your hair
- Your ultimate colour goal
Honesty is part of our process. There are times when we will recommend a rest period before proceeding with a correction — not because we can’t do it, but because rushing the process risks damaging your hair. Your hair’s long-term health always comes before a quick result.
Once we’ve completed the consultation, we’ll walk you through exactly what we propose to do, how long it will take, what it will cost, and what your hair will look like at each stage. You’ll never be surprised mid-appointment. If we recommend a multi-visit plan, we’ll book each session in advance so you know exactly what’s ahead.
We always finish a correction service with a treatment — typically Olaplex, Kérastase, or KEVIN.MURPHY masques — to support hair health during what is often an intensive process. We may also recommend ongoing maintenance like a colour gloss and tone treatment every 4 to 6 weeks to keep your corrected colour looking its best between full-service appointments.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
This depends entirely on your starting point and your goal. Some corrections can be achieved in a single extended appointment. Others — particularly going from very dark box-dyed hair to blonde — may require a staged approach across 2 to 3 visits. We’ll be completely transparent about this during your consultation.
As a rough guide:
- Toning corrections (brassy to neutral, warm to cool) — typically one appointment, 2 to 4 hours.
- Lightening corrections (going lighter from a darker, healthy base) — often one extended appointment, 4 to 6 hours.
- Box-dye removal to blonde — usually a staged process across 2 to 3 visits over 4 to 8 weeks.
- Colour-to-colour transformations — vary widely; we’ll give you a clear plan during the consultation.
Whatever the timeline, we’d rather take a little longer and protect your hair than rush a correction and damage it.
How Much Does Colour Correction Cost in Oakville?
Colour correction is the most variable service we offer because every situation is unique. Pricing depends on your hair’s current state, the goal you’re working toward, the products and time required, and the stylist tier you choose.
As a starting point, single-session colour corrections at Matthew Jonathan are typically priced as a balayage or full-highlight service, ranging from approximately $245 with a junior stylist up to $500 with Matthew Jonathan for very long or thick hair. Multi-session corrections are quoted per visit during your consultation, and you’ll always have a clear written estimate before any service begins.
We never start a correction without telling you exactly what it will cost.

Colour Correction FAQs
Can you fix box-dyed hair?
Yes — this is one of our specialties. Box dye behaves differently from professional colour because of how it penetrates the hair shaft, so removal can be unpredictable. We use a careful, hair-health-first approach, and depending on how dark or stubborn the box dye is, we may recommend a multi-session plan to lift gradually rather than aggressively.
Can my hair handle a colour correction right now?
That’s exactly what your consultation is for. We’ll assess your hair’s current condition — porosity, elasticity, damage from previous services — and tell you honestly whether it’s ready for correction or whether we need to do conditioning work first. We will never proceed with a correction we don’t believe your hair can safely handle.
I had my hair done at another salon and it’s wrong. Can you help?
Absolutely, and you’re far from alone — a meaningful share of our correction clients come to us from other salons. We don’t comment on other stylists’ work; our focus is simply getting you to the result you wanted in the first place. Send us a photo at 289-243-0144 and we’ll be in touch quickly.
Will I have to cut my hair short after a colour correction?
Not usually — and we’ll always exhaust gentler options first. Sometimes a small trim of the most damaged ends is the difference between a healthy result and a fragile one, but a major cut is rarely required. Our goal is to preserve as much length as your hair can safely support.
How long does a colour correction take?
It varies considerably. A simple toning correction may take 2 to 3 hours; a full lightening correction can take 4 to 6 hours; a multi-stage box-dye removal is spread across 2 to 3 visits over several weeks. We’ll give you a precise time estimate during your consultation.
Do you offer consultations before booking?
Yes — and for colour correction we strongly recommend it. Consultations are complimentary and can be done in person at our downtown Oakville salon, or by sending photos to 289-243-0144 if you can’t make it in. Either way, we’ll respond personally and discuss your situation before you commit to anything.
Most colour corrections are followed by ongoing maintenance to keep your new colour looking its best. We typically recommend a colour gloss and tone every 4–6 weeks to refresh tone between full appointments. For clients whose correction journey ends in a fresh dimensional finish, we’ll often build in classic highlights or a custom balayage service as the final step. And if your hair has been through repeated chemical processing, a hair botox treatment is one of the best ways to restore strength and shine.
