Natural Babylights in Oakville

Natural babylights in Oakville — soft, blended hair colour technique by Matthew Jonathan Salon

If you’re looking for a hair colour result that looks completely natural — like you were simply born with beautiful, sun-touched hair — babylights are the technique for you. At Matthew Jonathan Salon in downtown Oakville, our colourists are specialists in this ultra-fine highlighting technique, creating results so natural that nobody will know you’ve had colour done at all.

What Are Babylights?

Babylights is a hair colouring technique where exceptionally thin, delicate sections of hair are weaved and lightened with precision. The name comes from the fine, wispy highlights that babies and young children naturally have — soft, multi-tonal, and perfectly dimensional.

Unlike balayage or traditional highlights, babylights are applied in very small sections throughout the hair, creating a luminous, all-over brightness that adds depth and dimension without any dramatic contrast. The result is incredibly natural-looking — a soft shimmer of colour that enhances your natural beauty rather than transforming it.

Who Are Babylights Best For?

Babylights are an ideal choice for clients who:

  • Want a natural enhancement rather than a dramatic colour change
  • Are new to hair colour and want to start gently
  • Want to add dimension and brightness without harsh lines
  • Have fine or thin hair and want to avoid the appearance of heavy highlights
  • Are looking for a low-maintenance colour that grows out beautifully

Babylights are also a beautiful option for clients with early greys who aren’t yet ready for full colour coverage. The fine, blended sections soften the appearance of grey strands without the harsh regrowth line you’d see from a single-process colour. If you’re looking specifically for grey coverage, our French grey blending service may also be worth considering — your colourist can recommend the right approach during your consultation.

Babylights vs Balayage vs Highlights — What’s the Difference?

All three are highlighting techniques, but they create very different results:

  • Babylights — ultra-fine sections, all-over luminosity, most natural result
  • Balayage — hand-painted, gradient effect, sun-kissed and low maintenance
  • Traditional highlights — foil-based, more defined sections, brighter result

The simplest way to think about it: babylights are the most subtle of the three techniques, balayage gives you that sun-kissed, lived-in effect, and traditional foil highlights deliver brighter, more defined dimension. Many of our Oakville clients combine babylights with balayage for a multi-dimensional result — the babylights create luminosity throughout while the balayage adds depth and movement around the face. Your colourist will recommend the best combination for your hair type and lifestyle during your complimentary consultation.

How Long Does a Babylights Appointment Take?

Because babylights involve weaving exceptionally fine sections throughout the hair, the technique takes longer than traditional highlights. A full babylights service at our Oakville salon typically takes between two-and-a-half and four hours, depending on your hair length, density, and whether you’re adding a gloss, tone, or balayage to the service.

We always recommend booking a complimentary consultation before your first appointment so we can assess your hair and give you an accurate time and price estimate. This also gives us time to plan the right placement, lift level, and tone for your hair — babylights are a precision technique, and we never rush the process.

How Often Should I Refresh My Babylights?

One of the reasons clients love babylights is how beautifully they grow out. Because the sections are so fine and blended, there’s no harsh regrowth line — your colour fades softly rather than creating a visible demarcation.

Most of our clients refresh their babylights every 8 to 12 weeks, though some go longer between appointments. To keep your tone fresh between full services, we often recommend a colour gloss and tone treatment every 4 to 6 weeks — it takes about 30 minutes, refreshes your colour, and adds incredible shine without re-lightening the hair.

If your babylights have shifted brassy over time or you’re unhappy with how a previous colour is growing in, we also offer hair colour correction consultations to bring everything back to the result you actually want.

Babylights at Matthew Jonathan Salon

Every babylights service at Matthew Jonathan begins with a consultation where we assess your hair’s natural colour, condition and texture. We’ll discuss your goals and recommend the right approach — whether that’s babylights alone, or a combination with balayage or toning for added dimension.

We strongly recommend adding an Olaplex treatment to your babylights service to protect and strengthen the hair during the lightening process.

Our team uses only premium professional products, including Kérastase, Olaplex, and KEVIN.MURPHY, to ensure that the lightening process is as gentle on your hair as possible. Babylights involve repeated lifting on very fine sections of hair, so bond protection isn’t optional for us — it’s standard. We also keep detailed records of every formula we use on you, so when you come back for your refresh appointment, your colourist can replicate or adjust your result with precision.

Babylights FAQs

Are babylights damaging to my hair?

All hair lightening involves a chemical process, but babylights are among the gentler highlighting techniques because each section is so fine. We always use Olaplex or equivalent bond-protection during the service, and we never lift hair beyond what its condition can handle. If your hair is fragile, we may recommend starting with fewer babylights and building up over multiple appointments — protecting hair health is always our first priority.

Will babylights work on dark hair?

Yes. Babylights look beautiful on dark brunette and black hair — they create a soft, dimensional warmth without the dramatic contrast of traditional highlights. For very dark hair, we may recommend a multi-session approach to lift gradually and avoid brassiness, and we always finish with a custom toner to keep the result looking natural rather than orange.

Can I combine babylights with balayage?

Absolutely — and many of our Oakville clients do exactly that. The combination gives you the all-over luminosity of babylights with the face-framing dimension of balayage. Your colourist will design the placement during your consultation.

How much do babylights cost in Oakville?

Babylights are priced the same as our balayage service, with rates depending on your hair length, density, and which stylist tier you choose. Partial babylights start at $245 with a junior stylist, $280 with a senior stylist, $310 with a master stylist, and $385 with Matthew Jonathan. Full babylights range from $255 (short or thin hair, junior stylist) up to $500 (very long or thick hair, with Matthew Jonathan), with medium and long or thick hair priced between those tiers. Your colourist will provide a clear, written estimate during your complimentary consultation, before any service begins.

Babylights are one of our most versatile services and pair seamlessly with other colour work in the salon. Many clients combine babylights with a balayage base for maximum dimension, or layer in a colour gloss and tone to keep their blonde cool and bright between visits. For clients beginning to see their first greys, our French grey blending service uses similar microfine placement to soften regrowth naturally. And if you’re choosing between babylights and traditional foils, our classic highlights service page covers the differences.
